3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community-based organization headquartered in the Bayview Hunters Point ages 12 to 27 with medical and behavioral health services that encourage them to make sound, informed decisions to support their health, safety, and personal development. 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic also manages a number of successful Transitional Age Youth (TAY) housing stabilization programs, and one of San Francisco's few Youth Access Points for youth experiencing homelessness.

About the Position:

We are looking to hire a seasoned and enthusiastic Director of Development to lead the fundraising and development efforts of the organization. The ideal candidate will be a proven self-motivated, deadline-driven, and adaptable team player with experience cultivating relationships with high-net-worth individuals and the Bay Area business sector and securing significant financial contributions. Successful development professionals exhibit strong skills in management, written and verbal communications, data analysis and public speaking. The Director of Development will establish strategic and achievable fundraising goals, develop an annual operating expense budget for fundraising, manage events and fundraising campaigns, cultivate and maintain relationships with current and potential donors, and communicate donor effectiveness in the community. In addition, the Director of Development will be responsible for maintaining a current database of donors, their giving levels, and their contact information. In collaboration with the Executive Director, this position is also responsible for managing the public messaging about the organization.

The Director of Development is the fundraising liaison among senior staff, the Board of Directors (in particular the Board's Development Committee), and other development staff and/or consultants. This position occasionally requires work outside of normal business hours, and at locations that may be off-site.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The following is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the Director of Development. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed.

Strategic Planning:

  • Develops an annual Development Plan that sets fundraising goals and strategies for 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic. In the first year the recommended goal is $400,000 in individual and small corporate giving
  • Works with the Executive Director to realize the mission, purpose, and priorities of the organization.
  • Establishes fundraising objectives for the organization, setting one year, five year, and longer-term goals.
  • Partners with Development Consulting team and Board Development Committee to implement annual fundraising strategy.

Grants and Contract Management:

  • Oversees the completion of foundation grant applications and increases amounts funded year-over-year.
  • Manages the administration of post-award grants and contracts.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth understanding of grants, donor financial and reporting compliance, and budget conditions and status; attends and actively participates in grants- and contracts-related meetings, as appropriate.

Development and Fundraising:

  • Develop and execute a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Maintains a database of potential financial donors and grantors, including public funding, corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Maintains professional and friendly relationships with foundation grantors and updates them on how their grant funds are being utilized throughout the year.
  • Obtains contacts for potential donors from Board members and other donors, makes telephone or in-person contact, and introduces donors to the Executive Director.
  • Meets with each Board member prior to the end of each calendar year to determine individual Board member giving to assist in budget projections, to strategize on additional fundraising activities, and to discuss ways in which each Board member could be an ambassador and advocate for 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic; this information is consolidated into a plan and shared with the Development Committee.
  • Contacts each past donor at least annually, and maintains an active list of potential donors who are in the various stages of cultivation.
  • Ensures that annually 15% of operating budget is raised from individual donors and corporations and foundations separate from foundation grants.
  • Ensure that corporate sponsorships to events are sufficient to underwrite the bulk of costs of any/all fundraising events. Plans fundraising events that effectively communicate the mission and purpose of the organization.

Fiscal responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Executive and Finance directors, is responsible for setting annual fundraising budget and monitoring monthly financial results for funds raised and fundraising costs incurred.
  • Is responsible for ensuring that documented pledges are collected in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that gift and grant acknowledgements are properly recorded and sent within 7 days of receipt and deposit.

Data Reporting:

  • Develops and tracks proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.
  • Utilizes Donor Perfect (or similar database program) and ensures that all formatting and edits are current so that reports can be run, linkages can be made, and donor history is properly maintained.
  • Utilizes Donor Perfect (or similar database program) to track donor cultivation.
  • Works with Finance, Development, and Program Teams, to assist in meeting both internal and external reporting deadlines; maintains grants module or other grants management system, once implemented.

Marketing and Communications:

  • Serves as the organization's primary advocate to the media and the general public, and primary 3rd Street audiences to position and strengthen 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic's name recognition and reputation in the community.
  • Oversees the creation and production of the Annual Report.
  • Creates consistent language and marketing materials to be used by Board members and organization staff members for giving and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Partners with the Development team in preparing newsletters and social media posts.
  • Prepares weekly report of activities and distributes them to the Executive Director and the Development Committee.
  • Oversees the organization's website, ensuring that information is current.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director on design, purchase, and distribution of 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic swag.
  • Stays current on trends and legislation that are likely to affect 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic's funding.
  • Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to donors and the public.

About you:

  • Has a Bachelor's degree as well as experience in fundraising. Degrees in business, communications, marketing, public administration or nonprofit administration are preferred. Significant equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Masters degree in marketing and/or communications is a plus.
  • Has at least three years of proven successful development and fundraising experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Is able to articulate strategies for soliciting and cultivating gifts, sponsorships, and grant writing.
  • Is familiar with Donor Perfect (or similar database programs).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills. Experience producing well written marketing materials for multiple channels.
  • Demonstrates proven ability to speak and write in an engaging, concise and persuasive manner.
  • Is able to use various databases to run reports.
  • Has demonstrated knowledge of sound and ethical fundraising principles.
  • Is a superior communicator who readily shares information concisely.
  • Is articulate and personable, is able to convey a positive image of the agency externally, and is credible and reliable for staff internally.
  • Is a team player.
  • Is able to multitask, stay calm under pressure, while demonstrating attention to detail, as well as flexibility and persistence.
  • Exhibits patience and active listening skills, , demonstrates good judgment and integrity, strong analytic skills and is persuasive and friendly.
  • Can provide solid references upon request.

General info:

  • This position is an exempt, salaried, and full-time role.
  • This position works from our Annex office in San Francisco's Executive Park neighborhood near Candlestick Point.
  • This position reports to the Executive Director.

Compensation and benefits:

  • Starting salary is $120,000 and commensurate with experience and reflects the significant responsibilities of the position, within and outside the organization.
